One Poem by Paula Puolakka

Written in response to this month’s Special Challenge.

You Need Water

It doesn’t matter if you have
the temper of a mountain lion,
a wild boar,
a hummingbird,
a hazel grouse,
a blue macaw,
or a yellowhammer:
clean water is what you need to
stay alive.

It doesn’t matter if you’re from
the blue mountains,
the emerald forest,
the big city,
the mill town,
the steppe,
or the icy valley:
clean water is what you need to
stay alive.

Paula Puolakka is a Beat poet, writer, and MA. In May 2020, NiiloMäkiInsitute granted her a small prize in poetry. The town of Kauhava also decided to promote her work, and the art society InkunIdeapaja was the first operator in Finland to publish Puolakka’s work in English.
